“Sometimes I sleep under the
footbridge” Suzon, age 9
“I live in front of Farm
Gate Market. Sometimes I sleep under the footbridge over the
main road. In the monsoon season I sleep sometimes in an empty
room in the market. I have to pay a few taka bribe to get the
place. In the winter I buy up used bed sheets for 10 or 12 taka
or jute sacks to sleep on and cover myself like a quilt.
My mother and stepfather have never contacted me. I miss my mum
very much. Some weeks ago I went to see her, but it was
impossible to go the house because my stepfather was there. He
is a very cruel person. He gets very angry, swearing all the
time. I pinched 200 taka from his pocket. A few days later he
saw me in Kawran Bazar. He grabbed me and wanted to take me home
for a beating, but I jumped out of the window and ran away. For
this reason it has become impossible for me to return home.
My mother has now spent most of the money I earned. Uncle
has a grocery business in a shop in Kawran Bazar. I gave all my
money to him, so he can look after it for me. I manage to save
around 200 taka each month. Occasionally I have sent money to my
sister who lives in the village. I can read. I would like to go
to night-school, but I can’t afford it.”
